Welcome to my Welfare Comics blog. I started Welfare Comics back in the early 90s when I was in high school math class. The class bored me and the teacher didn't care so I took my time to draw comic books by folding my math paper in half. While my early art was quite crude, the humor was still there. After drawing a few of these comics I then showed it to a friend (Josh Fernadez) who enjoyed them so much he also did some of his own. His artwork was far superior to my own and he helped refine some of the character designs. However my own artwork greatly improved over the years and Welfare Comics began to grow until the late 90s when we stopped. Welfare Comics was not dead however. Since then Josh has put together various pieces of animation and we have both done various pieces of artwork. Things have also evolved quite a bit as well. Since a few of the characters were based off actual people, designs were tweaked further, as well as names and various other features to avoid any possible conflict in case the comics gained any popularity.

So, what is Welfare Comics? Welfare Comics is based around a fictional family called the Grouches who live in a place called "River City". The main character Gilbert is a dumb as nails redneck mechanic who also farms shit. Gilbert also has a brother named Filbert who enjoys sailing the various polluted waters in River City. Next up is Gilberts 18 year old son Mike. Mike is probably the only normal one of the bunch. Next up is Gilberts other son called The Gilly. The Gilly is a big fat guy who doesn't do much other then eat. Other characters include Gilberts wife Gabriel who is only heard but never seen. Then there's Leo Lion who is a family friend who happens to be gay, although never shows it around Gilbert. There are many many more characters in the Welfare Comics universe which I plan on showing at some point in the future.

Anyway, throughout the coming weeks I plan on reworking much of my old art work and putting it up on here. Here is one example of a trading card I did back in the 90s and later reworked in Photoshop...
